Tobacco Control Research Unit

Tobacco kills eight million people each year, including 65,000 children who die from diseases related to second-hand smoke. The rise of new nicotine and tobacco products such as e-cigarates presents new challenges and complexities in the fight against tobacco.

MANT has been working in Tobacco control in West Bengal from 2005 onwards with much success.
The Case study of Smoke-free Howrah that was successfully facilitated by MANT has been published by WHO as part of the much-awaited book, i.e. The Power of Cities: Tackling Noncommunicable
Diseases and Road Traffic Injuries.

MANT was also awarded the Best NGO in Tobacco Control in the 5th National Conference on Tobacco or Health held on 25th-27th September 2021 at Chandigarh, India, organized by the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), a public medical university at Chandigarh. Recently, the Medica Group of Hospitals felicitated MANT for its contribution to Cancer
Prevention on World Cancer Day on 4th February 2023.

Past Research Projects:

Study on Compliance with Tobacco Control Legislation in 5 Districts of West Bengal in 2017.
Conducted a study on the immediate impact of demonetization on tobacco sales with technical support from The Union (2018-19). The paper was sent for Publication.
Conducted Air-Quality Monitoring in Designated Smoking Areas and Rooms in Kolkata in 2018-19.
Worked as a state partner to conduct two studies, i.e.,

a) JHU Compliance Study on Bidi/SLT Monitoring and

b) JHU Compliance Study on Film Rules in 2019-20

In 2021-22, conducted 3 studies:

a) Study on Bidi Brands in West Bengal
b) Enumeration Survey of Tobacco Vendors in 10 Municipalities and 2 Municipal
Corporations
c) Study on Compliance of Film Rules in Bengali Cinemas, TV Serials and Web-
series

As a Partner of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, USA, we have implemented/been Implementing the following research studies:

Assessment of Compliance with tobacco product display and point-of-sale tobacco control policies and tobacco vendor density in Siliguri, India, in 2020-21
Tobacco Litter Pilot Study in Kolkata from June 2022 to August 2022
